For Angola and Mozambique: yellow fever (mandatory at entry for many origins), malaria prophylaxis (essential), typhoid, hepatitis A/B. For Cape Verde: malaria risk in some islands (prophylaxis advised), hepatitis A, typhoid. The doctor prepares your exact plan including the mandatory yellow fever guidance.

For South-East Asia: hepatitis A (recommended for all travellers), typhoid (strongly recommended), hepatitis B (long stays or healthcare contact), Japanese encephalitis (rural areas > 1 month), rabies (backpackers, long trips). For Central American and Caribbean resort destinations (Cancún, Punta Cana, Varadero): hepatitis A (recommended), typhoid (if travelling beyond the resorts), tetanus up to date. No significant malaria risk in mainstream tourist zones. Main risk: dengue, chikungunya and zika (daytime mosquitoes) — the doctor advises on repellent, prevention and warning signs. The dengue vaccine (Qdenga) may be indicated for those who have had dengue previously.

It depends on destination and clinical profile: Malarone (atovaquone+proguanil) is the most common choice for short trips (1–2 weeks) — well tolerated, taken from 1–2 days before until 7 days after. Doxycycline is cheaper and suitable for long trips, but causes photosensitivity. Lariam (mefloquine) is weekly and contraindicated in depression/anxiety. The doctor assesses destination, duration, comorbidities and prescribes the most appropriate option.

The yellow fever vaccine is given only at International Vaccination Centres authorised by DGS — main centres: Lisbon (CSP Lapa), Porto (Centro de Saúde Norton de Matos), Faro, Coimbra. Cost is around €30–40 and prior booking is required. Kliniqa does not administer vaccines (they are in person) but the doctor identifies the nearest centre, confirms whether you need it, prepares the International Certificate and prescribes all other travel medications (antimalarials, travel antibiotics).

Since 2016 the WHO considers a single dose valid for life (no 10-year booster needed). The International Certificate of Vaccination (yellow card) issued after vaccination is valid for life. Some countries may require a booster — the doctor confirms the exact requirements for your destination.

Some live vaccines (yellow fever, BCG) are contraindicated in pregnancy. Malarone-based malaria prophylaxis is not established as safe in pregnancy — chloroquine or mefloquine may be alternatives. Destinations with zika risk should be avoided during pregnancy. The doctor reviews each case and can issue a medical letter to change destination or postpone the trip (useful for travel insurance refunds).
