Yes. Our doctors are authorised to issue IMT medical certificates with full validity, sent electronically to the IMT system.

No. Unlike other telemedicine consultations, the driving-licence medical certificate requires the physical verification of the driver’s visual acuity, hearing and reflexes. These cannot be reliably assessed through a webcam, so a certificate based only on a video call does not meet the requirements of the Portuguese Medical Council’s Code of Ethics or the IMT regime — and may be deemed invalid. For that reason Kliniqa always performs this exam in person, as a home visit: the doctor comes to your home, carries out the full physical assessment and submits the certificate electronically to the IMT.

The doctor performs the test in person at your home with standardised optotype charts, assesses and records the result on the certificate.

Yes. It includes categories A, B, C, D and E. For categories C and D (lorries and passengers) additional tests may be needed.

The validity of the IMT certificate varies with age and category. For category B up to age 70 it is 5 years. The doctor advises at the end of the assessment.

Since Brexit, UK licences no longer enjoy automatic EU recognition in Portugal. To convert: (1) Obtain legal residency in Portugal; (2) Complete the IMT medical examination at Kliniqa (€29 online nationwide, or €49 in-person home visit in the Porto area); (3) Complete the psychotechnical assessment at Kliniqa (€60, online); (4) Submit your application at an IMT office with both certificates and your UK licence. Unlike some countries, Portugal does not require a driving test for UK licence holders — only the medical and psychotechnical.

Under the Brazil–Portugal bilateral agreement, Brazilian licence holders can convert their CNH to a Portuguese licence without a driving test. The process: (1) Establish legal residency and obtain your residence permit; (2) Complete the IMT medical examination at Kliniqa (€29 online nationwide, or €49 in-person home visit in the Porto area); (3) Complete the psychotechnical assessment at Kliniqa (€60, online); (4) Submit at IMT within 90 days of obtaining residency. This is one of the most straightforward licence conversions in Portugal.

Ukrainian driving licences do not have a bilateral recognition agreement with Portugal. Holders of Ukrainian licences (including those under Temporary Protection) must attend full driving theory and practical exams at a Portuguese driving school. However, an IMT medical certificate from Kliniqa is required as part of the process for enrolling at a driving school and for the subsequent IMT application.

Driving licences from Angola, Cape Verde and Mozambique are not automatically recognised in Portugal. You will need to complete full Portuguese driving theory and practical tests. The IMT medical certificate (and psychotechnical if required) from Kliniqa is required as part of your driving school enrolment and final licence application.

You have 90 days from the date of obtaining your residency permit to apply for a Portuguese driving licence conversion at IMT. Driving with an expired foreign licence after this period may be illegal. Book the IMT medical at Kliniqa as soon as you receive your residency permit to stay on schedule.

Category B (cars): no medical assessment required until age 60 (administrative renewals every 15 years). At 60: renewal with medical certificate, valid for 5 years. At 65: renewal every 5 years. At 70: renewal every 2 years. From 70 onwards: annual renewal. Categories C/D (lorries/passengers): medical certificate every 5 years until age 65, then annually. The Kliniqa IMT certificate covers all these renewals.

Yes. If your licence expired recently, you can renew with the Kliniqa IMT certificate (€29 online, or €49 in-person home visit in the Porto area) submitted electronically to IMT — driving with an expired licence is a serious offence (€120–€600 fine + 60-day driving ban). If it expired more than 2 years ago, you may need to retake theory and practical exams. Renew quickly to avoid this.

Yes. The same IMT certificate covers all categories: AM (mopeds), A1 (motorcycles up to 125cc), A2 (medium motorcycles up to 35kW) and A (full motorcycle). The assessment is identical — vision, reflexes, general fitness — and the certificate is submitted electronically to IMT regardless of category.

Yes. The IMT medical certificate (€29 online, or €49 in-person home visit) and the psychotechnical assessment (€60, online) can be booked the same day. For non-EU licence conversions, categories C/D and taxi/TVDE drivers, the psychotechnical is mandatory. You receive both documents by email same day.

Yes, in most cases. Well-controlled type 2 or type 1 diabetes (no severe hypoglycaemia episodes), controlled hypertension, dyslipidaemia and other stable chronic conditions do not preclude a driving licence. The doctor reviews clinical stability and medication. Specific cases (epilepsy, advanced glaucoma, certain arrhythmias) may require additional assessment.

Not necessarily. The doctor assesses your visual acuity using the glasses you normally wear (or without if you do not use any). If vision does not meet legal minimums (0.5 with correction in the better eye for cars), the doctor recommends an ophthalmology appointment before issuing the certificate. For drivers who already have a "glasses mandatory" condition on their licence, an adequate prescription is enough.
