Renewing a long-term prescription online: what to bring, and what does not belong here
A consultation for stable long-term medication. What to prepare, the limits, and when to book general practice instead.
Online prescription renewal (about 15 minutes) is for stable long-term medication. The doctor confirms the medicine, the dose, adherence and side effects before issuing an electronic prescription. It is not automatic.
Bring the name and dose of each medicine, the pack or a photo of the previous prescription, allergies and any recent blood tests. Say how long you have taken them and whether anything has changed.
Do not use this consultation to start a new treatment, to reassess a complex plan, or for specially controlled medicines. Pharmacological weight management is booked as a weight-management consultation, not here.
A prescription issued in another country is not valid in a Portuguese pharmacy. If you already take the medicine in a stable way, the doctor may, after assessment, issue the Portuguese equivalent when it is clinically appropriate.
Book before you run out of tablets. If new symptoms appear, book general practice or urgent care, not a renewal on its own.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a family doctor?
No. The assessment is by video without an assigned family doctor. Each prescription depends on the clinical assessment.
Will a Brazilian or UK prescription do?
It is not accepted in Portugal. The doctor can issue a Portuguese prescription after reviewing your current medication.
Can I request blood tests in the same consultation?
If the renewal needs tests, the doctor will say so. A standalone lab referral is the test-request consultation.
