Yellow fever and the international vaccination certificate
What the international vaccination certificate is, where yellow fever vaccine is given in Portugal, and what the travel consultation does (and does not do).
Some countries require proof of yellow fever vaccination on entry. The official document is the WHO international vaccination certificate, completed and stamped at the centre that gives the vaccine. It is not a certificate issued on a video call.
In Portugal, yellow fever vaccine is given only at International Vaccination Centres authorised by DGS. Usual examples: Lisbon (CSP da Lapa), Porto (Norton de Matos Health Centre), Coimbra and Faro. You must book at the centre. Kliniqa does not give this vaccine or issue the certificate.
Since 2016 the WHO has, as a rule, treated a single dose as valid for life. The certificate issued after that dose follows that logic. Entry rules can still differ: the doctor checks the destination and transit countries, not a generic internet calendar.
In the travel consultation (€39), the doctor assesses whether the vaccine is indicated, whether the certificate is required, which centre to use, and prescribes other travel medicine when clinically justified (for example malaria prophylaxis). There is no “just in case” prescription without indication.
Bring the full itinerary (including stopovers), dates, vaccination history and any condition that may contraindicate live vaccines (pregnancy, immunosuppression, egg allergy when relevant). The centre charges for the vaccine and the certificate; those fees are not included in the Kliniqa consultation.
Frequently asked questions
Does Kliniqa issue the international vaccination certificate?
No. The certificate is completed at the International Vaccination Centre when you are vaccinated. The travel-clinic doctor says whether you need the vaccine and where to go.
I had the vaccine more than ten years ago. Do I need a booster?
As a rule the WHO considers one dose enough for life. Some countries may still ask for specific proof. Bring the old certificate to the consultation so the doctor can assess the destination.
Can I book the DGS centre without a prior consultation?
You can. The consultation is there so you do not attend the centre without knowing whether the vaccine is indicated, whether the destination requires it, and to cover the rest of the plan (malaria, kit, other vaccines).
