When pharmacological treatment for weight loss may be indicated
Usual clinical criteria, what the doctor assesses, and why a prescription is never automatic.
Pharmacological treatment for weight loss can only be considered after a medical assessment. In Portugal these medicines require a prescription and should not be obtained without clinical supervision.
In practice the doctor assesses BMI, metabolic risk, associated disease, concomitant medication, contraindications and the ability to attend follow-up. Indication does not depend only on wanting to lose weight.
Even when there is an indication, the plan includes follow-up: dose adjustment, watching for effects, dietary and habit guidance, and renewal only if treatment remains appropriate and stable.
If there is no clinical indication, or essential data are missing (for example blood tests), the doctor may delay the prescription, request tests or propose another approach. That protects patient safety and the legality of the prescription.
If you are already on treatment and only need to renew a stable long-term medicine, a prescription-renewal consultation may be appropriate. To start or reassess a weight-loss plan, book the weight-management consultation.

Frequently asked questions
Does the doctor prescribe just because I want to lose weight?
No. Indication depends on a clinical assessment (BMI, metabolic risk, comorbidities, concomitant medication and contraindications), not on the wish to lose weight alone.
Can I get this medicine without a prescription?
No. In Portugal, prescription-only weight-loss medicine requires assessment and a prescription. Without that, the pharmacy cannot dispense.
What if I only need to renew a stable prescription?
If long-term treatment is stable and the weight plan does not need review, prescription renewal may be the right act. To start or change a weight-loss plan, book the weight-management consultation.
