Urgent paediatric consultation online in Portugal: when to use it and when to call 112

The urgent paediatric online consultation is for acute symptoms in children when you need a prompt assessment, typically within minutes after payment, 8am–10pm Lisbon time. It does not replace 112 or hospital A&E in life-threatening situations.

It is useful for fever, vomiting and diarrhoea, moderate allergic reactions, mild wheeze, or questions about medicine and hydration. The doctor assesses by video call, grades severity and, if clinically indicated, issues a prescription with paediatric dosing valid in Portuguese pharmacies.

Call 112 (or go to A&E) if there is severe breathing difficulty, loss of consciousness, a prolonged seizure (over 5 minutes), uncontrolled bleeding or suspected poisoning. In newborns with fever, the usual advice is urgent in-person assessment. The online doctor confirms and directs you.

You do not need an SNS number or a family doctor. Immigrant families, tourists and residents without an active SNS registration can use the same consultation. If the case needs in-person care, the doctor indicates the next step.

Have to hand: the child’s age and approximate weight, measured temperature, medicine already given, allergies and photos of rashes if they exist. For non-urgent symptoms, a non-urgent paediatric consultation or SNS 24 (808 24 24 24) may be more appropriate.
