Online weight-management consultation in Portugal: how it works

What happens in the first weight-loss consultation, when pharmacological treatment may be included, and how medical follow-up continues.

The online weight-management consultation is a medical assessment to define the most suitable weight-loss treatment for your case. It is not an automatic prescription renewal and not a guarantee of medication: each decision depends on the clinical assessment.

In the first consultation (about 30 minutes), the doctor reviews medical history, BMI, comorbidities (for example diabetes or hypertension), current medication and the therapeutic aim. When needed, they request blood tests before starting or adjusting treatment.

If clinically indicated, the doctor may include pharmacological treatment in the plan and issue a prescription valid in Portuguese pharmacies. If there is no indication, they guide safe alternatives and appropriate follow-up.

After the initial assessment, follow-up consultations monitor response, effects and, when applicable, renew the prescription. Anyone who already started treatment in another country can ask for continuity in Portugal after clinical reassessment.

For the consultation, have to hand: current weight and height, a medication list, allergies, known conditions and, if they exist, recent blood tests. The correct starting point is the first assessment, not follow-up.

Frequently asked questions

Does the weight-management consultation guarantee medication?

No. It is a clinical assessment. Pharmacological treatment only enters the plan if indicated and, when applicable, after the data the doctor considers necessary.

I already started treatment in another country. Assessment or follow-up?

Start with the first assessment. Foreign prescriptions are not valid in Portuguese pharmacies; continuity in Portugal depends on clinical reassessment and, if indicated, a local prescription.

When do I book follow-up?

After the initial assessment, once a plan is under way. Follow-up monitors response and effects and renews the prescription if treatment remains appropriate.
