Online or in-person weight-management consultation: what changes
What a video call can assess, when the doctor asks you to attend in person or for blood tests, and why it remains a clinical consultation.
An online weight-management consultation is the same clinical act as an in-person assessment. The doctor takes the history, BMI, medication and comorbidities, and decides the plan. What changes is the setting: it is a video call, with no travel. The need for medical indication is the same.
On a video call, in most cases, the doctor can gather what is needed to decide whether a medical weight-loss plan is indicated and whether pharmacological treatment belongs in that plan. They may ask for blood tests, photos of medicine packs and a weight measured on the day.
Sometimes a video call is not enough. If a physical examination is needed, if the data are not enough, or if something cannot be clarified on screen, the doctor will point you to an in-person visit or another pathway (urgent care or 112). A video call does not approve a treatment that would be refused face to face.
The electronic prescription, when there is one, is the same as from a consulting room. It is issued only if clinically indicated, and it is valid in Portuguese pharmacies. Doing the consultation online does not bypass the law.
It always starts with the first assessment consultation. Follow-up can also be by video call, but only after a known plan already exists.

Does online replace attending in person?
Not always. For most weight assessments a video call is enough. If the doctor needs an in-person examination, they will say so. There is no guarantee that everything can be settled at a distance.
Is an online prescription valid at the pharmacy?
A Portuguese electronic prescription, issued after assessment, is legally valid at Portuguese pharmacies. A foreign prescription does not replace this step.
Is follow-up online as well?
As a rule, yes, after the initial assessment. Follow-up is not the place to start the plan from scratch.
