IMT medical certificate online in Portugal: how to renew your licence
What you need for the online driving medical (€29), why SNS is required, and when to choose a home visit.
The medical certificate for a driving licence (IMT) can be obtained by video call in Portugal. The doctor assesses fitness (vision, reflexes and relevant conditions) and, if clinically appropriate, submits the certificate electronically to IMT.
For the online route an SNS user number is required. It is needed for electronic submission. Without SNS, the option may be an in-person home assessment in the Porto / Vila Nova de Gaia / Matosinhos area, when available.
The online consultation costs €29. Have to hand: citizen card, SNS number, glasses if you use them, a medication list and the current licence (or a foreign one, if converting).
Converting a foreign licence follows IMT’s own rules (residence, deadlines and, for some countries, tests). The medical certificate is only one step. The doctor handles the clinical process, not the administrative filing at IMT.
If fitness is not clear at a distance, the doctor may request further tests (for example a vision assessment) or advise an in-person examination.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need an SNS number for the online IMT certificate?
Yes. Electronic issue to IMT requires an SNS user number. Without SNS, ask about the IMT home-visit option in the Porto area.
How much does the IMT certificate cost at Kliniqa?
Online: €29 nationwide. Home visit (Porto / V. N. Gaia / Matosinhos): €49, when available.
Does it cover age-related renewal (60, 65, 70+)?
Yes, when the clinical assessment allows. How often you must renew depends on licence category and age. The doctor issues the certificate; IMT sets the administrative deadlines.
