Fever or diarrhoea after travel: urgent care, travel clinic or 112?

The travel consultation prepares departure. If you are already back with fever, diarrhoea, vomiting, jaundice or severe unwellness, the right act is usually another: an acute assessment, not a vaccine plan for a trip that has ended.

Book urgent care (€35, 8am–10pm Lisbon time) if you can stay at home: fever, diarrhoea without severe dehydration, nausea, a rash, or a question about medicine you are still taking. Say the destination, the dates and whether you took prophylaxis. That changes what the doctor looks for.

Call 112 or go to hospital emergency if there is severe breathing difficulty, confusion, fainting, very high fever with neck stiffness, bloody diarrhoea with collapse, marked jaundice, or you cannot drink. A video call does not replace 112.

Malaria and other imported infections can appear days or weeks after return. Do not wait for paracetamol to “see you through” if you were in a risk area and the fever starts again. The doctor decides whether to treat as an outpatient, request tests or refer you.

Children: use urgent paediatrics. Pregnancy: say so at the start. If you have not left yet and only want a vaccine plan, book the travel consultation (€39), not urgent care.
