Blood tests before weight-management treatment: which and why
Why the doctor may ask for glucose, HbA1c, thyroid and lipids before starting a plan, and what to do if you do not yet have results.
Before starting medical treatment for weight loss, the doctor needs a metabolic picture. Blood tests are not a commercial extra: they confirm indication, rule out contraindications and avoid ignoring diabetes, thyroid or liver disease.
A typical request may include glucose, HbA1c, lipids, kidney and liver function, and thyroid tests. The exact list depends on your history, current medication and recent results. Do not copy a panel from the internet. The doctor requests what your case needs.
If you already have tests from recent months, bring them to the first consultation. If you do not, the consultation can still go ahead: the doctor assesses, requests the tests and only then starts or adjusts treatment, if indicated. Prescribing without data, when those data matter, is not “being quicker”.
A blood-test referral can be issued by video call when that is the right act. If the aim is to decide a weight plan, start with the weight-management consultation; the test request enters that path when needed.
Repeating tests later is also common, to watch response and safety. That is decided at follow-up, not by a one-size-fits-all routine.

Frequently asked questions
Can I book only the blood tests and skip the weight consultation?
You can request a test referral if that is the act you need. To start weight-loss treatment you need the clinical assessment. Tests alone do not replace it.
Do tests from a pharmacy or another country count?
Often yes, if they are recent and readable. The doctor decides whether they suffice or whether to repeat or complete the panel.
Will the doctor refuse to treat without tests?
They may delay the prescription until the necessary data exist. That protects patient safety; it is not a final refusal of follow-up.
